Landfill Tours
The Franklin County Sanitary Landfill is an important resource for central Ohio. We like to educate people about the landfill, how it operates and why it's important to divert as much material from it as possible. As part of our educational efforts, SWACO hosted landfill tours for more than 4,100 individuals in 2018.
Here's the breakdown:
• 75 school tours with 3,410 students
• Two business tours with 45 visitors
• Five community tours with 100 visitors
• Three summer camps with 589 students

Community Outreach
In 2018, SWACO partnered with schools, companies, communities, nonprofits and media outlets across Franklin County in numerous outreach programs. SWACO gave presentations, hosted events, sponsored activities, gave tours and held workshops for dozens of individuals and organizations, including:

Earned 87 SWACO or recycling-focused news stories
One of the highlights of our earned media efforts last year was securing a monthly column in ThisWeek Community News, a family of 21 weekly printed newspapers and websites. The column, written by SWACO's Executive Director Ty Marsh, reaches more than 100,000 people each month with messages about recycling, composting, safe disposal and waste reduction.
Social Media
SWACO maintains active Twitter and Facebook accounts, allowing us to engage with people on social media about recycling and other waste diversion methods. We average 22 Facebook posts and 20 Twitter posts each month, and the number of people who follow us continues to increase. In 2018, Facebook reached 500 page likes and Twitter reached 800 followers.
Quarterly and Annual Publications
In 2018, SWACO published three e-newsletters, which reached 29,140 e-news subscribers. We also produced the annual Community Impact Report, which was sent electronically to our e-news subscribers as well as in print via ThisWeek and The Columbus Dispatch, which helped us reach an additional 220,000 households in Franklin County.
